Yesterday we wrote about a Suffolk motorist who is kicking up a fuss about the dangerous road surface, SMA, still being used by Suffolk County Council - and, it turns out, by plenty of other local authorities. For those who are interested, here is a link to the BBC webpage where you can find a short clip of the BBC Look East report … http://search.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/search/results.pl?q=road+surface&uri=%2Flookeast%2Flatest_stories%2F&go.x=39&go.y=18 … and here are a whole load of interesting pages about this potentially lethal kind of tarmac. Evidently it's been causing concern - and at least one death - for a long time and all over the country … http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/1695686.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/4111256.stm http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2005/06_june/20/roads.shtml http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/file_on_4/4278419.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/file_on_4/4291921.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/real_story/4104180.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/real_story/4122760.stm http://www.highwaysmaintenance.com/SMAlaypics.htm http://www.soci.org/SCI/publications/2001/pdf/pb68.pdf http://www.ha-research.gov.uk/projects/index.php?id=661 http://www.highwaysmaintenance.com/AprilMar05.htm http://www.network.mag-uk.org/june05p9.html http://old.slambikers.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=87&Itemid=99 http://www.derbygripe.co.uk/roads.htm There was even a petition about it on the No.10 website. Its time-limit has now run out, and in any event the government simply dismissed the whole thing. Like they do … http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/page11551.asp Finally, if any of our Grumpy Readers have had similar experiences, or know anyone who has, our Suffolk motorist would love to hear from them.
